Power Play Goals do in Tigers in loss to North

Lakeville North converted three of five power play opportunities in a 4-1 South Suburban Conference win over the Tigers Friday night at Schmitz-Maki Arena.

The loss dropped Farmington to 3-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the South Suburban. The Panthers improved to 5-2-1 for the season and 3-0-1 in league play.

“Five on five we out played them, but we just have to be able to get the puck out of our zone when we have opportunity on the penalty kill,” Farmington coach Jon Holmes said. “We had chance after chance after chance to get the puck out of our zone with icing or clearing but we were not strong enough to get it out…

“You do that once and you may recover. You do that twice and the other team will get an opportunity. You do that routinely and you cannot withstand two minutes with a player down, ever.”

North outshot the home team 15-9 in a fast-paced opening period but the teams hit the first break in a scoreless tie thanks in large point to the strong net play of Tiger goalie Emily Auge.

The Panthers got on the board first early in the second period on a power play score by Payton Pearson and made it 2-0 in the final minute of the second on another power play score by Taylor Flaherty.

Marissa Agerter tallied the lone Tiger goal of the contest with yet another power play goal (from Dani Wright and Kenzie Hauswirth) early in the third period to pull Farmington to within one but a late power play score by Flaherty and an empty-netter in the game’s closing seconds sealed the win for the visitors.

Auge finished the night with some impressive numbers, turning away 34 of 37 Panther shots on net. North outshot the Tigers by a count of 38-30.

“Because we are such a young team we have a lot to learn,” Holmes said, “but we also have a lot of room to grow.

“This game was a good lesson for us. It will make us better because this is the type of group that does not like to lose and they are very committed to working on areas of growth.”

The Tigers will be looking to get back on the winning track Tuesday when they travel to the Apple Valley Sports Arena for a South Suburban Conference clash with the Eagles.
