The Bemidji High School girls hockey team dominated Rogers for most of the first two periods of their game Friday night at Bemidji Community Arena.

The Lumberjacks outshot the Royals 16-9 in the first 34 minutes.

Despite that, it was still a scoreless game going into the final period.

And despite a strong third period, it took some overtime heroics for the Lumberjacks to escape with a victory.

Heather Olson scored with 4 minutes, 27 seconds to go in overtime, netting the game’s only goal and securing Bemidji’s 1-0 victory.

The Lumberjacks (3-8) outshot the Royals (0-3-3) in the third period, peppering goaltender Ellie Anderson with 11 shots.

However, Anderson stood on her head, stopping numerous Lumberjacks scoring opportunities.

Most impressive was nearly seven minutes into the extra period, when Jacie Lalli forced a turnover at the red line and had a breakaway opportunity with Sylvia Grimm. Lalli passed to Grimm just feet from the goalie and lifted a wrist shot toward Anderson, who got a blocker on it at the last second to preserve the tie.

The Lumberjacks also had a late power play opportunity when Kayla Bolster was penalized for slashing at 9:14, but the Royals penalty killers stepped up and shut the Lumberjacks down despite a few shot chances.

In the overtime period, though, Olson got it done to give BHS its well-deserved win. She buried an unassisted goal to end the game 3:33 into the extra frame.

In all, the Lumberjacks outshot the Royals 29-17. Leighton Rockensock made all 17 saves for BHS to earn the shutout.
