Sluggish Tigers fall to Apple Valley 3-1

A lackluster first two periods cost the Tigers in a 3-1 South Suburban Conference loss to previously winless Apple Valley (1-8) Tuesday night at the Apple Valley Sports Arena.

The Eagles dominated the first two periods, building a 2-0 lead while outshooting their guests by a 21-14 margin.

Farmington rebounded in the final frame, outshooting their hosts by a lopsided 15-3 but could get only one puck past Eagle goalie Taylor DeForrest.

“This was one of the roughest nights we've had,” Tiger coach Jon Holmes said. “The girls didn't leave the locker room for a good hour after the game.

“We struggle with finding the spark to get motivated on the ice. It looks as if we are all just playing very complacently…We made some adjustments in bringing up some new faces in the third period and the puck didn't leave Apple Valley's zone. Hopefully getting some healthy competition will help get that spark re-lit.”

Kenzie Hauswirth’s team-leading eighth goal of the season pulled the visitors to within 2-1 early in the final period but the only other scoring came from Valley’s Mikayla DeForrest who provided the clincher with under two minutes remaining in regulation.

Maddie Bowe drew the start in the Tiger nets and stopped 21 of 24 shots. The Tigers outshot the Eagles 29-24 for the night.

The game was not without its positives as the Tigers stayed out of the penalty box (one two-minute minor) and got some positive third period play from some new contributors.

“Savanna Tucker got some ice in the third period and she looked solid,” Holmes said. “She has scored four goals in her last two JV games and earned some time with the varsity.”

Holmes said the loss could provide a turning point in his team’s so-far up-and-down season.

“I am a firm believer that a person or a group will not always rise to an occasion but rather fall to their level of preparation,” he said. “This certainly has been the case for us the past couple of weeks.

“Hopefully this loss will be a season changer for us. It certainly could be one to look back on and see a major difference before and after.”

Farmington (3-4-1) will try to bounce back Friday night when it entertains winless Rosemount (0-9) in a 7:15 start at Schmitz-Maki Arena.
