Tigers Hold On To go Two in a Row

Tigers hold on for second straight win

Farmington used a balanced offense, a hustling defense and stingy goaltending to hold off Eastview 4-3 in a South Suburban Conference game played Tuesday night at Schmitz-Maki Arena.

The victory was the second straight for the Tigers who crept back above the .500 mark (8-7-1) for the season and moved to 5-5-1 in conference play.

“We put together a nice game,” Farmington coach Jon Holmes said. “We had a solid start and an even better second. In the third we came out relentless right away and then began to look a little too comfortable.

“We allowed Eastview to get back into the game too easily. They definitely played well and earned their way back in with hard work, but we did not keep our same level of intensity we had for the first two and a half periods…But in the end we found our way out and staved off another 6-on 4 attack over the final couple of minutes.”

The visitors took a 1-0 lead into the second period before Farmington countered with four unanswered goals, three in a fast-paced second period and another early in the third, to grab a 4-1 lead with 15 minutes left in regulation.

From there on, it was a dogfight with the Lightning putting constant pressure on Tiger goalie Emily Auge. The visitors scored twice and several times threatened to for the second time in a month send the contest into overtime. (The teams played to a 4-4 overtime tie when they met in November in Apple Valley)

Four different players—Maddi Oines, Kenzie Hauswirth, Marissa Agerter and Ellie Moser--netted goals for the winners who continued to share the scoring duties.

Moser and blue line stalwart Dani Wright each added a pair of assists for the Tigers who also got assists from Oines, Morgan Medved, Shelby Nehls and Taylor Anderson.

“We switched up our lines a bit coming in, looking to be more functional in the defensive zone while allowing some possible sparks to connect offensively,” Holmes said. “They seemed to gel pretty good and it was nice to see we have options.”

Auge boosted her individual record to 6-5-1 with a 31-save effort. The Lightning outshot their hosts by a 34-32 margin in a game that saw both teams manufacture numerous quality scoring opportunities.

“Emily is playing better each game,” Holmes said. “She made some pretty big saves in the third period to keep us on top.  She is young and has some seasoning left for sure, but she is playing extremely well as a freshman.”

The Tigers have now built some momentum (four wins in the last five games) as they head toward the home stretch of their South Suburban Conference schedule and prepare for the Section 1AA playoffs.

Next on the docket is a Friday conference road encounter at Shakopee. The Sabers blanked the Tigers 3-0 when they played at Schmitz-Maki Arena on Nov. 28.
