Burnsville nips Tigers 4-3 in OT

by Pat Rupp

The Tiger offense was there but the defense that had been so dominant the past few games had an off night in a 4-3 overtime loss to Burnsville in a South Suburban Conference game played Tuesday night at Schmitz-Maki Arena.

Despite outshooting its guests by a wide 48-28 margin Farmington played from behind all night, trailing 1-0, 2-1 and 3-1 and 3-2 before finally tying the game late in regulation.

“We played well offensively and got the puck to the net,” Tiger coach Jon Holmes said, “but we gave up too many odd-man rushes and breakaways that accounted for their goals.

“Due to our being out of position in transitions, we also left ourselves susceptible to penalties since we had to get back into position from behind the play…With such a young team these setbacks are bound to happen, but nonetheless they are frustrating after a string of stellar defensive zone performances the past few weeks.”

Farmington picked up seven penalties in the game, good for 14 minutes of seat time.

The Blaze struck first but Ellie Moser’s goal (from Marissa Agerter and Morgan Medved) later in the first period drew the Tigers even heading to the second.

Burnsville scored the first two goals of a second period that saw Farmington assessed six minutes of penalty time. Dani Wright’s late goal (from Shelby Klotz and Maddi Oines) pulled the home team to within 3-2 with a period to play.

The game remained that way until Oines (from Kenzie Hauswirth) slipped the puck past Blaze netminder Lauren Bench with 6:36 left in regulation.

The Tigers outshot their guests 5-3 in the extra session but picked up three more penalties in the process. Mady Bodick sent the visitors home with smiles on their faces when she scored the game-winner on the power play midway through the scheduled eight-minute period.

“We prefer to play three lines and get into a rhythm, but unfortunately in a game like this we had to react to what was happening on the ice,” Holmes said. “We had to rely on matching line combinations in addition to not getting quality rest for our top lines because of taking so many penalties.

“The positive certainly is that we came hard offensively. Their goalie was very solid and we just were not able to find the twine enough.”

Farmington goalie Emily Auge finished the contest with 24 saves.

The loss was the first of the new year for the Tigers who saw their record dip to 9-8-1 overall and 6-6-1 in South Suburban Conference play.

Thursday the girls head to south for a game with Section 1AA rival Owatonna. Saturday its back to South Suburban Conference action with a road contest against Lakeville North at Ames Arena.
