Tigers come up a goal short at North

By Pat Rupp

Farmington (10-9-1) took the game to host Lakeville North (15-4-1) Saturday at Ames Arena but came away a goal short in a 2-1 loss.

The defeat left coach Jon Holmes’ team with a South Suburban Conference record of 6-7-1 and in the middle of the South Suburban Conference pack. Second place North improved to 11-2-1 in league play.

“A pretty solid game for us,” Holmes said. “We played good and consistent defense and offensively we had many opportunities.

“Despite losing, this was a game where we saw how competitive we are and how close we can be to getting to a section final.”

The Tigers actually put more shots on goal than their hosts (29-26) but could manage to get just one shot past Panther goalie Abby Cooper who finished the contest with 25 saves.

Another positive that Holmes found in the one-goal loss was that it came on a very different surface than Farmington’s home at Schmitz-Maki Arena.

“North has the only Olympic-sized rink that a high school team will play on,” he said. “It gives the team that practices on it every night a distinct advantage. We made the adjustment very well.”

North’s Riley Tousignant scored the first of her two goals early in the second period to give North the lead but the Tigers’ Marissa Agerter knotted the score minutes later on an assist from Maddi Oines.

Tousignant netted the game-winner midway through the third period with Taylor Flaherty recording an assist.

The visitors had plenty of chances late, their best opportunities coming when the Panthers were assessed a game misconduct penalty with seven minutes left in regulation.

Farmington goalie Emily Auge helped keep her team in the game with a 24-save performance.

“She has shown some great growth through her experience this season,” Holmes said. “It has really been nice seeing her progress every game.”

Tuesday the Tigers return to their home ice with a South Suburban Conference match-up with Apple Valley.

“We have five tough games left in the regular season,” Holmes said, “and in them we’ll hopefully gain the confidence and experience to pick up some more wins.”
