Minnetonka and Thief River Falls are the top seeds in the girls’ hockey state tournament set to begin Wednesday and Thursday at Xcel Energy Center.
Thief River Falls is the top seed in Class 1A. It opens quarterfinal play against New Ulm at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Minnetonka, the No. 1 seed in Class 2A, plays Andover at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
Here are the pairings announced Saturday by the Minnesota State High School League:
Class 1A, quarterfinals Wednesday
• Hutchinson (16-10-1) vs. Blake (No. 2 seed, 24-4), 11 a.m.
• Alexandria (16-9-1) vs. Red Wing (No. 3, 23-4-1), 30 minutes after 11 a.m. game
• New Ulm (19-8) vs. Thief River Falls (No. 1, 23-1-3), 6 p.m.
• Hibbing-Chisholm (No. 5, 12-12-2) vs. South St. Paul (No. 4, 15-11-2), 30 minutes after 6 p.m. game
Class 2A, quarterfinals Thursday
• Eastview (14-12-2) vs. Hill-Murray (No. 2 seed, 22-5), 11 a.m.
• Buffalo (21-7) vs. Edina (No. 3, 20-7-1), 30 minutes after 11 a.m. game
• Andover (14-12-2) vs. Minnetonka (No. 1, 21-6), 6 p.m.
• Blaine (No. 5, 20-7-1) vs. Lakeville South (No. 4, 23-4-1), 30 minutes after 6 p.m. game
Semifinal games in both classes will be played Friday. The 1A championship game is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday, with the 2A championship to follow at 7 p.m.
