Wayzata coach Becky Wacker and Edina coach Laura Slominski share more in common than leading Lake Conference teams ranked in the top 5 in the Class 2A coaches' poll.
Both played for the Minnesota women's hockey team, and while their playing careers didn’t overlap, Slominski spent a year as an assistant coach during Wacker’s senior season with the Gophers.
Slominski spent time working on Minnesota’s penalty kill unit and that’s something that stuck with Wacker as she began her coaching career.
The Hornets haven’t given up a power-play goal this season in 19 penalty kill situations while the Trojans have given up just four in playing shorthanded 29 times.
Wayzata has appeared in the past two Class 2A, Section 6 championships and finds itself with a new postseason foe as Edina, which has appeared in eight consecutive Section 2 championships, moved to Section 6 after the groupings were realigned in the offseason.
This early meeting between two Section 6 contenders and Lake rivals makes it our pick for the Top Game of the Week.
