The Bears led St. Paul United 3-0 in the second period when Lucy Burton struck for three goals in a span of 4 minutes and 24 seconds

If such thing as an overlooked hat trick exists, Blake junior Lucy Burton scored one in Saturday’s Class 1A girls’ hockey state championship game at Xcel Energy Center.

The Bears led St. Paul United 3-0 in the second period when Burton struck for three goals in a span of 4 minutes and 24 seconds, doubling the lead.

Not bad for a third-line center who had yet to score in this postseason. Burton, though, didn’t stay on the third line for long. She moved up to the top line with Blake’s trophy goal-scorer Carly Bullock.

“After Lucy’s second shift, it was very clear she had something tonight,” Blake coach Shawn Reid said. “So I made the switch.”

A low-scoring game was desired, St. Paul United coach Nate Mauer said. But the game plan got shredded, in part due to Burton.

“They buried No. 4 and No. 5 and that was pretty much it,” Mauer said.

Burton added one more goal for good measure. She said she wasn’t really sure what was different Saturday.

“I just came out really focused and determined,” Burton said. “The whole team supported me and amped me up.”

Before the game, Reid asked each player about their goals for the game. Burton said she simply wanted to have fun.

In the end, Burton’s big night became a footnote as Bullock scored her third tournament hat trick, setting a career record with 22 tournament goals in the process.

No matter, Burton said.

“Whatever happened tonight was a team effort,” Burton said. “Individuals might have scored more goals than others but I couldn’t have done it without the teammates I have.”

Third-place game

Hill-Murray regrouped for a 5-3 victory over Edina in Saturday’s Class 2A third-place game. The Pioneers (29-1-1), whose undefeated season ended Friday night, raced to a 3-0 lead in the third-place game. Edina rallied to tie the game 3-3 in the second period.

Hill-Murray defenseman Kenzie Prater scored early in the third period to put the Pioneers ahead 4-3. Abigail Boreen’s second goal of the game sealed the outcome. Lolita Fidler had a goal and an assist for Edina (20-9-1).

Etc.

• Saturday’s two championship games drew a announced record attendance of 4,530. Fans could buy one ticket good for both games. The championship session, created before last season to increase attendance, has drawn more fans each time.

• Senior forward Sophie McGovern of Proctor/Hermantown was the Class 1A Herb Brooks award recipient.
