Edina senior Sophie Slattery found some redemption with her team’s first hockey title.

“Yeah, I guess you could say that,” she said, after Edina beat Blaine 4-0 for the Class 2A title. “This has always been the goal. I think for a program that’s never done it versus a program that’s expected to do it, I think this just means a lot more.”

Slattery played first doubles for the tennis team that had its 19-year state title streak stopped last fall.

She scored two goals and two assists in the girls’ hockey tournament, helping Edina to the program’s first state title.

Quite a run at Blake

Blake goaltender Anna Kruesel, a junior, has enjoyed more success as a player than most programs can boast in their history.

She earned her fourth consecutive Class 1A state tournament championship start. And she moved to 3-1 in those games as the Bears’ defended their title Saturday.

“It’s indescribable,” Kruesel said. “When we lost against Thief River Falls [in 2015] it was one of the worst feelings I ever had. So to win is just remarkable.”

Kruesel and sophomore Olivia Bizal split starts.

Her former goaltender coach at Blake, Chris Esposito, came in from Chicago for Saturday’s game. He is now the volunteer goaltender coach with the Minnesota-Duluth women’s hockey team.

Third place games

In Class 2A, Eden Prairie blanked Hill-Murray 6-0. Eagles’ senior forward Naomi Rogge finished with two goals and three assists. She finished the tournament with nine points (five goals, four assists).

A hat trick from Madison Oelkers led Warroad to a 6-2 defeat of Northfield in the 1A game.

Consolation finals

Farmington beat Eastview 3-0 for the Class 2A consolation title. Eighth-grade defenseman Brenna Furhman and sophomore forward Marissa Agerter scored goals in the second period.

In Class 1A, Alexandria edged Hibbing/Chisholm for a 1-0 victory on junior forward Kristin Trosvig’s shorthanded goal in the third period.

Herb Brooks winners

Hibbing/Chisholm senior Lilly Rewertz in Class 1A and Blaine senior Emily Brown in Class 2A received the Herb Brooks Award.

The award is given to players who best represent the former coach’s values and character.

Attendance up

The championship session for girls’ hockey drew 4,959 fans, up from 4,079 last year.

Attendance has increased in each of the three years the tournament has held the Class 1A title game at 4 p.m., followed by Class 2A at 7 p.m.

The tournament drew 20,884 to Xcel Energy Center this year, compared to 21,472 in 2016
