Sophomore goalie discloses her secret talent – decorating cupcakes

Katie Ahmann

Sophomore goalie Katie Ahmann was a standout for East Ridge’s first-year team.

How old were you when you first put on the skates? Really little! We’ve always been a hockey family, and my parents pushed me to start at a young age (which I am grateful for).

First hockey memory: Playing Mites with the boys. I played hard-core defense for a third-grader.

What are three things that you couldn’t play without? My iPod – I need to jam before a game; my helmet — I take a lot of shots to the face; my goalie partner Paige—because I always need someone there to talk to.

To get prepared for a game … I have to follow all of my superstitions. I’m very superstitious and following them correctly calms me down.

What would you change about hockey if you could? How people think girls’ hockey is a joke compared to the boys. We put in just as much work, but we don’t get the same kind of credit.

What goes through your mind when play is at the other end of the ice? Stay focused, stay focused. And sometimes I sing to myself.

•  One small tip before a big game: Don’t be overwhelmed — take it one period at a time.

Secret talent: Weirdly enough, decorating cupcakes!
