Rachael Bona wore an appropriate T-shirt under her No. 7 Coon Rapids jersey for Friday’s Class 2A, Section 5 championship game.

On the back it read “Beast Mode” above a light switch in the “on” position.

Bona, a Ms. Hockey finalist and future Gopher, capped a torrid section playoff run with her third hat trick in as many games. Her latest three-goal performance fueled the No. 1 seed Cardinals’ 4-1 victory over No. 2 seed Anoka. Bona now has 53 goals this season.

“I have run out of things to say,” Cardinals coach Jessica Christopherson said. “She just brings so much to our team. She can beat you so many ways.”

On Friday, Bona put Anoka in a hole with two first-period goals. Aware the Tornadoes endured a four-overtime marathon in Wednesday’s semifinals, Coon Rapids set out to grab and early lead to sap their energy.

“We wanted to get on them right away and just work them,” Bona said.

Coon Rapids (21-5) split its regular-season series with Anoka (17-6-3) in the Northwest Suburban Conference but took the rubber match in style. Bona streaked across the crease and flipped the puck over goaltender Samantha Ubl for her first goal at 3:04 of the first period.

Later in the period Bona drew a penalty that ruined a Coon Rapids 5-on-3 power play. But she squared all accounts by returning to the ice and digging the puck out to Amy Schlagel before finishing the play by accelerating past an Anoka defender, catching a pass from Schlagel and once again flipping the puck into the net.

Cardinals fans serenaded Bona with a chant of, “That’s Ms. Hockey.”

Coon Rapids’ Chelsea Cyert fired a shot from the slot past Ubl’s blocker to give the Cardinals a 3-0 lead at 4:35 of the period. Just 51 seconds later, Bona struck for a third goal that resulted in dozens of hats getting tossed onto the ice.
