Hill-Murray, the No. 4 seed, got three goals and an assist from star forward Hannah Brandt to beat second-seeded Roseville 4-3 to advance to their first state tournament appearance ever.
With the score tied 1-1, Hill-Murray took command with two goals 47 seconds apart in the second period. Margo Lund scored the go-ahead goal for the Pioneers at 6:27 and Brandt followed with an unassisted tally at 7:14.
Roseville pulled within one on a power-play goal by Sarah Hill at 12:57, but Brandt’s third goal of the game with just nine seconds left in the second period gave Hill-Murray another two-goal cushion.
Roseville cut the lead to one when Lee Stecklein scored at 13:26 of the third period, but that was the last of the Raiders’ offense.
CLASS 1A, SECTION 1 CHAMPIONSHIP
• RED WING 4, NORTHFIELD 1: Annie Gorman’s power-play goal at 10:54 of the third period broke a 1-1 tie and propelled the Wingers to their second state tournament berth in three years. Forward Nicole Schammel scored two goals, including a penalty shot in the first period, and assisted two other goals for Red Wing.
CLASS 1A, SECTION 4 CHAMPIONSHIP
• SOUTH ST. PAUL 7, TOTINO-GRACE 1: The Packers parlayed a four-goal second period outburst into their 11th state tournament appearance, the most in state history. Emily Reibert and Abby Wisneski each had two goals and an assist for South St. Paul, which has won four state championships.
CLASS 2A, SECTION 1 CHAMPIONSHIP
• LAKEVILLE SOUTH 6, FARMINGTON 2: Morgan Fritz-Ward had a hat trick, including two power-play goals inthe third period, as the South Suburban Conference champion Cougars pulled away from Farmington for their second section championship in the last three years.
