Tigers Throttle Lourdes 9-1

by Pat Rupp

Bemidji State University recruit Ellie Moser scored four goals as the Tigers overcame a sluggish first period to hammer Rochester Lourdes 9-1 in a non-conference game played Tuesday night at Schmitz-Maki Arena.

Farmington looked as though it might run up an even more lopsided score when it scored two lightning-quick goals, one each by Moser and Brenna Fuhrman, in the game’s first 85 seconds.

But then Lourdes answered with its only score of the night to take some wind out of the Tiger sails. Farmington led by just a goal at 2-1 after the first stanza.

“After the first two goals we fell into auto-pilot, took three unnecessary penalties and our play began to fall quite a bit,” coach Jon Holmes said. “In between periods we talked about the team we want to be. We stressed that we have to have a mentally tough mindset in all situations and play with integrity at all times.”

Whatever the message sent between periods was received loud and clear with the Tigers netting six unanswered goals on 21 shots on net. Moser garnered half of that number with Jenna Gerold, Marissa Agerter and Jayden Seifert also getting into the scoring act.

“Ellie has been creating a lot of opportunities the past few games so it was nice to see her get rewarded on the scoreboard,” Holmes said. “She and Marissa (Agerter) have really been learning how to use each other’s speed and quickness together and so I expect big things from their line moving forward.”

Farmington held an 8-1 lead at the final break with Gabriella Hudson supplying the final score of the night with a goal in the game’s final two minutes.

“With the big lead in the third period we were afforded the opportunity to get Bailey Zimmer, Kiya Vincent, Elizabeth Auge, and Grace Auge some ice and they all played extremely well,” Holmes said. “They all had some good chances in front of the net.”

Abby Bollig picked up her first win of the season with a 13-save performance in goal. Farmington outshot its guests by a dominant 48-14.

Megan Bernu had a pair of assists for the winners. Seifert, Carly Lancaster and Claire Enright each tallied one in the victory.

“The girls are starting at a point this year with many of the concepts and questions we were addressing in the post season last year and that is phenomenal,” Holmes said. “The biggest aspect for any team is mental mindset and focus. If we continue to be conscious and deliberate about how we talk, act, and interact we will continue to play solid hockey.”

The girls won’t have much time to savor their brief Thanksgiving vacation as they return to the Schmitz-Maki ice Saturday afternoon to entertain Eden Prairie. The Eagles own a 2-2-1 record in the early going with wins over Lakeville South and Elk River/Zimmerman, losses to Hill-Murray and Blake and a scoreless tie with Apple Valley.
