Breck junior Carly Beniek scored the first goal of the game in a fashion that was a common theme for her team.
“I got a rebound,” Beniek said. “And we shot and got a rebound, which I think a lot of our goals came from rebounds, which helped us.
Breck girls’ hockey is back at the state tournament for the first time since the Mustangs won the Class 1A title in 2012.
None of the players on the roster have played at state before, but the No. 2 seed made a big opening statement with a 9-2 victory over Marshall in the quarterfinals on Wednesday at Xcel Energy Center. The Mustangs (17-10-1) had eight different goal scorers in the game.
Junior Carly Beniek scored the first goal for Breck in the first period. Olivia Mobley scored two goals in a four-goal second period for the Mustangs. She now has 29 tallies for the season.
Marshall (17-11-0) scored early in the third period with the 30th goal of the season for junior forward Sydney Mauch.
The Mustangs outshot the Tigers 51-13 in the game.
