It took a few seconds for the significance of the moment to sink in for Roseau’s Kayla Santl. The junior forward had just forced the puck through Moorhead’s defense, allowing teammate Reese Strand to ram the rebound home for a 2-0 lead midway through the second period of their Tuesday night game.

It was just another goal during an eventual 6-0 Rams’ victory. Or perhaps not.

After a subdued celebration in the Spuds’ crease, Santl suddenly started bouncing joyfully into her teammates’ arms, smiles all around. The puck was removed from the game, making its way to the Roseau bench to be saved for her trophy case. Her assist on the play was the 100th point of her prolific varsity career.

“We didn’t know for sure, but then we thought, ‘Wait, it actually happened,’ ” grinned Santl, who admitted she had the milestone as a goal entering this winter.

After the game, excited teammates presented Santl with the puck and a handmade sign to celebrate the achievement. The Rams, ranked No. 10 in the Class 2A coaches' poll, lingered on the Moorhead Sports Center ice for a few minutes and gathered around their Bemidji State-committed junior leader to pose for a few photos. With another 20 games or so in her junior season and a full senior campaign ahead, it may not be the last milestone puck saved for Santl, either.

Other than Strand’s goal, the Rams’ line of Santl, Strand, and junior Anika Stoskopf was held off the scoreboard, not a common occurrence for the high-scoring trio. But the Spuds (0-7-2, 0-1-1) had no answer for the line of sisters Kate and Ella Helgeson and Brooke Zagone.

“We can always count on any line to go out there and score,” Santl said.

Sophomore Kate Helgeson racked up a four-point night (two goals, two assists) to pace the Rams’ offense, while Ella Helgeson and Zagone each had a goal and an assist.

After a scoreless first period, Helgeson's line scored three times in the second period to break the game open. Senior Ella Helgeson got the Rams on the board 3 minutes, 40 seconds into the second period, assisted by her younger sister and Zagone. Kate Helgeson scored midway through the frame and Zagone closed out the scoring in the second period with 2:54 remaining.

“We have some good puck handlers and they’ve played together for a long time,” said Roseau coach Steve Huglen. “They’re experienced and they complement each other so well, too.”

It was a tough night for Moorhead, which mustered only seven shots on Roseau goaltender Kiana Flaig. The Spuds had a flurry towards the end of the second period, but Flaig stopped both Brianna Krejci and eighth-grader Bria Holm from close range. Holm also rung the crossbar on a third period breakaway, preserving the shutout for Flaig.

Senior Paige Schmidt was strong in goal for the Spuds, stopping 53 shots, including several in-tight chances that she smothered.

Huglen was happy with the effort his team gave, but knows the Rams (9-1, 3-0) need to bury the puck and take advantage of their chances.

“Like any coach would say, you just have to keep getting better and better as you go along,” Huglen said. “You can’t just sit still.”

There was no issue with that Tuesday night. The Rams moved the puck almost at will in the Moorhead zone. But Schmidt stood her ground and the Moorhead defense did a good job limiting second-chance opportunities.

The Rams scored twice more in the third to eventually push the game to running time. Kate Helgeson netted her second goal and freshman Ginevra Johnson scored her first varsity goal on her first varsity shift, also earning a trophy puck in the process.

It was a night of celebrations and milestones for the Rams.
