Defending its homecourt, Holy Angels drops St. Paul Como Park in overtime

It took bonus time, but the Stars handed the Cougars their first loss of the season Tuesday night.

Isabelle Henry took a steal home for a game-winning basket in overtime as Holy Angels beat previously undefeated St. Paul Como Park 90-88 Tuesday at the Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield.

“I just really wanted to win,” Henry, a sophomore guard, said. 

Henry swiped the ball at midcourt and turn it into a layup with four seconds left in the extra period to seal the home win. Henry, who also hit a game-tying basket late in regulation, finished with 14 points.

Holy Angels’ Isabelle Henry took a steal home for a game-winning basket as the Stars beat St. Paul Como Park, ranked No. 3 in Class 3A by Minnesota Basketball News, 90-88 in overtime Tuesday at the Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield.

Holy Angels (6-2) led most of the way, but the visiting Cougars (7-1) rallied late in the second half to tie it 64-64, with the teams exchanged leads multiple times after that.

The Cougars led 82-80 late on a pair of free throws by sophomore guard Demya Riley, but the Stars tied it up on a basket by Henry, a junior guard, with 13 seconds left.

The Stars’ Francesca Vascellaro, a junior guard, led all scorers with 36 points. Teammates Rachel Kawiecki and Henry added 14 points apiece.

Ronnie Porter, Jada James and Kaylynn Asberry scored 20 points apiece to lead Como Park. Shania Nichols contributed 13 points and Riley finished with nine.
