While many of Minnesota's high school girls’ hockey teams spent the holiday break engaged in tournaments across the state, Wayzata was on hiatus.

After recording a two-goal victory over Champlin Park/Coon Rapids on Dec. 20, the Trojans spent some time away from the rink and didn’t play again until Thursday, when they faced Lake Conference rival Eden Prairie.

The time off did exactly what it was designed to do.

First report

After a two-week break, Wayzata got off to a hot start in 2019. The Trojans scored a pair of goals and defeated Eden Prairie 2-0 on Thursday at Plymouth Ice Center.

Wayzata (12-2, 1-1) junior defenseman Addy Hackley beat Eden Prairie (10-3-2, 0-1-0)  goaltender Molly Goergen on a long shot late in the first period. The Trojans peppered Goergen with pucks, outshooting the Eagles 12-4 in the first.

After a scoreless second period, Wayzata, ranked No. 3 in the Class 2A state coaches’ poll, got an insurance goal four minutes into the third period. Senior forward Kaci Johnson converted on her breakaway attempt to make it 2-0.

The No. 8-2A Eagles were shutout for the first time this season despite 20 saves from Goergen. Trojans goaltender Stephanie Garvis earned the shutout with 22 saves.
