Top games: Class 2A's finest, Blake and Edina, meet in potential marquee postseason matchup

Jan. 18: The top-ranked Bears and the second-ranked Hornets tangle again in the regular season, with the winner gaining an edge over the other contenders in the highly competitive Section 6.

We task our reporters with identifying several intriguing games throughout the state to assemble our Top Games of the Week. The matchups are presented in no particular order, and when there are additional games we want to highlight, we’ll include them with brief notes.






Other games to keep an eye on

South St. Paul vs. Mahtomedi, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16. South St. Paul (12-5-2, 6-0-1) faces Mahtomedi (9-8-2, 5-2-1 ) in a duel between the top two teams in the Metro East Conference. When they met last on Dec. 18, the No. 5-1A Packers won 3-1. 

Thief River Falls vs. Warroad, 5:15 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 17. Warroad's undefeated record includes a 3-1 win over No. 6-1A Thief River Falls on Dec. 18. The No. 1-1A Warriors (19-0, 5-0) and Prowlers (13-5, 4-3) also are rivals Class 1A, Section 8, which increases the stakes of this rematch.

Grand Rapids/Greenway vs. Proctor/Hermantown, 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 15. Grand Rapids/Greenway (13-6, 2-0) hopes to put the brakes on a four-game losing streak when it runs into No. 4-1A Proctor/Hermantown (12-7-2, 2-0-0), which looks to get back on track after losing a road matchup with Blaine Friday.
