Tigers Vault up South Suburban Ladder; Claim Flannel Jacket

By Pat Rupp

Farmington jumped up a couple of notches in the South Suburban Conference standings with a 4-3 road win over Burnsville Saturday afternoon. The win was the sixth in seven games for the streaking Tigers who moved to 10-6-1 overall and 7-4-1 in conference play.

“Other than a one minute stretch in the third period where Burnsville scored two goals we played pretty well,” Farmington coach Jon Holmes said. “We called a timeout after that and gathered our thoughts and mindset back to where we needed to be. We finished the rest of the game strong.”

The Blaze got on the scoreboard just 30 seconds into the first period but the visitors countered with two scores later in the period, one by Samantha Moehle (from Claire Enright and Brenna Fuhrman) and one by Fuhrman (from Enright and Jayden Seifert).

Moehle netted her second of the night on assists from Fuhrman and Seifert for the only score of the second period.

Enright (from Carly Lancaster and Moehle) made it a 4-1 lead early in the final frame before things got hairy in a hurry.

The Blaze scored twice in a span of just 53 seconds with five minutes and change remaining in regulation to set up an exciting finish.

“Both goals were eerily similar,” Holmes said. “We just locked up our legs and glided around the defensive zone.”

Ryleigh Furlong worked the Farmington nets to post her 10th win of the season and finished with 19 saves.

The win also gave Holmes ownership of the Flannel Jacket given to the victorious coach after each of the Blaze-Tigers semi-annual match-ups.

“It originated with coach Cassano and me as a friendly and competitive gesture for our two teams to play for something other than just conference standings,” Holmes said. “The winning team gets to claim the flannel and place it on its coach. The coach then uses it for various activities throughout the year.

“I may rake leaves wearing it and tweet it to Burnsville. Coach Cassano used it as an additional layer of warmth during the cold snap we had recently and sent a photo to our girls twitter page.

“It is a fun and friendly rivalry as the Cassano’s are a Farmington family with children playing in Farmington. Mike is the director of youth development for hockey in Farmington and knows our kids well, so getting the flannel back was a huge incentive going into this game and certainly a fun event after claiming it.’

Farmington takes a break from its South Suburban Conference schedule with a road game next Tuesday night at Blake, the top-rated Class AA team in Minnesota.
