With 58 seconds left in regulation, Mound Westonka faced a hurdle as it tried to hold onto a 3-2 lead against Holy Family Catholic. The White Hawks were down two skaters after being called for a pair of penalties and would have to play shorthanded for nearly a minute.

For Mound Westonka, the move was easy — put senior captain Sydney Hules out to help fend off the Fire.

It was the right move. With Hules on the ice, Mound Westonka (17-0-3, 7-0-3) held off Holy Family Catholic to win 3-2 on Thursday at Victoria Ice Center.

Mound Westonka took the first penalty following a post-stoppage skirmish as senior wing Emily Schepers was taken off for cross-checking. With tensions running high on both sides, Mound Westonka was called for an additional infraction: a bench minor for unsportsmanlike conduct. Suddenly, the White Hawks were down two players.

The Fire (13-4-2, 8-2) called a timeout which gave Mound Westonka a moment to regroup. That meant making sure Hules was in the correct spot to help thwart off Holy Family Catholic.

The White Hawks, ranked No. 3 in the Class 1A coaches’ poll, got their first two goals from sophomore center Grace Peterson. The second tally gave Mound Westonka a 2-1 lead after the puck was mishandled by Holy Family Catholic deep in its own zone.

The game remained tied at 2 until late in the third period when senior center Sydney Hules scored on the power play to give Mound Westonka (17-0-3, 7-0-3) the lead for good.

The Fire (13-4-2, 8-2-0), who were outshot 34-20, lost their second consecutive meeting against their Wright County Conference foe. Eighth-grade defender Olivia Paidosh and junior forward Lauren Hickey scored for Holy Family Catholic.
