Farmington closed the books on its 2022-23 regular season in style with a wire-to-wire 5-1 South Suburban Conference win over Rosemount Saturday afternoon at Schmitz-Maki Arena.

The win was the fourth straight for the surging Tigers who enter next week’s Section 1AA tournament as the No. 5 seed in the eight-team field.

“This was another solid win for us,” Farmington coach Jon Holmes said. “We are really putting the puzzle together. We have stayed disciplined and have been relentless in our effort.

“It’s been sort of  an ‘against all odds’ season for us. We’ve gone through a lot with all of the close losses in games where we have dominated play but we’ve stuck with the process and found the path to success.”

In Saturday’s season finale, neither team managed a score until Jenna Goblirsch (from Morgan Mitchell and Lexi Giller) found the twine with fewer than four minutes remaining in the first period.

Then came what Holmes said may have been the turning point of the game. With just seconds remaining in period one Kenna Kadrlik made it 2-0 with her team-leading 19th goal of the season.

“That was the back-breaking kind of goal that had gone against us much of the season,” Holmes said. “That was a huge turn in our favor.”

Kennedy Meier put the home team up by three scores midway through the second period on assists from Madison Kadrlik and Josie Empey. The goal was Meier’s second in as many games and her seventh of the season.

Rosemount scored right out of the gate in the third period but Goblirsch (from Amelia Goblirsch and Addison Trapp) netted her second of the game four minutes later to all but seal the deal.

Later, senior Meghan Stoa brought the home crowd to its feet, scoring her first career goal on an empty-netter in the closing minutes.

“What a way to end the season and her career at Schmitz-Maki,” Holmes said. “That was a highlight for sure.”

As has been the case most of the season, Farmington outshot the opposition, this time by a 47-26 count.

Tiger goalkeeper Addison Moudry turned away 25 shots to register her sixth win of the season.

Farmington will take a 9-16 record , but more importantly its four-game win streak, into Wednesday’s section opener at fourth-seeded Northfield.

“We need to continue to play with that little chip on our shoulder,” Holmes said. “We still have some things to prove.”

Other opening Section 1AA games include:

No. 1 Lakeville South vs. Bye

No. 7 Rochester Mayo at No. 2 Lakeville North

No. 6 Rochester Century at No. 3 Owatonna

Farmington celebrated Senior Night with a solid 4-2 South Suburban Conference win over Metro South Thursday night at Schmitz-Maki Arena.

The victory paid back the Phoenix who defeated the Tigers 3-2 earlier in the season. Metro South is a cooperative program consisting of players from Burnsville, Faribault, St. Agnes, St Paul Academy Faribault Bethlehem Academy and DeLaSalle.

Farmington (8-16) won for the third consecutive outing and has coach Jon Holmes thinking positive heading into next week’s Section 1AA tournament.

“We wanted to be playing our best hockey going into the playoffs,” Holmes said, “and this was another step in that direction. We continued to attack the net but also took care of our defensive zone…Our confidence should be building as we go into the post-season.”

The Tigers led wire-to-wire, using a pair of first period goals to set the tone for the evening. Kennedy Meier got the winners off on the right foot, scoring at 7:36 of the opening period on assists from linemates Morgan Mitchell and Lexi Giller.

Later in the first, leading scorer Kenna Kadrlik netted her 18th goal of the season with sister Madison Kadrlik and Alexa Bricko assisting.

Madison Kadrlik (from Kenna Kadrlik) gave her team some breathing room with a laser shot from the point on the power play early in the second period but the Phoenix rallied for a goal of their own late in the second to make it a 3-1 game headed to the final frame.

Metro South made it interesting with a goal midway through the third but Madison Kadrlik restored order with another power play goal from long range, this one on an assist from Abby Gehrke.

“Madison is a warrior,” Holmes said. “She really keys our defense. We are obviously a better team when she is on the ice. And she is on the ice a lot.”

Farmington finished with a decisive 47-26 advantage in the shots on goal department.

Senior Kieley Curow patrolled the Tiger net and posted her third win of the season with a 24-save performance.

“We still have to get better around our goal,” Holmes said. “Both of the goals we gave up came on rebounds that we didn’t clear…Still, overall, we played very well.”

Holmes envisions his team drawing a fourth or fifth seed for the eight-team Section 1AA tournament, but said that process will take of itself.

“We want to have another good game on Saturday and then we’ll worry about the playoffs,” he said.

The Tigers entertain Rosemount Saturday afternoon at 3:00 at Schmitz-Maki in their regular season finale.

Senior Kenna Kadrlik scored three times and the Tiger defense turned in another solid effort in a 3-1 non-conference victory over Hastings Tuesday night at Schmitz-Maki Arena.

The win was the second straight for Farmington (7-16) which is trying to build some momentum heading into next week’s Section 1AA playoffs.

“This game started out like so many of our losses this season,” Farmington coach Jon Holmes said. “We buzzed the net in the first period but had nothing on the scoreboard….We did the same thing in the second but still only had one goal to show for it.”

The Tigers outshot the Raiders 25-5 over the first two periods but led just 1-0 heading to the final break. Kadrlik netted the first of her thee goals late in the second on an assist from linemate Abby Gehrke.

Hastings tied the count just 1:06 into the final period to set up what looked like another nail-biter of a finish.

“When they tied it up we didn’t have any type of letdown,” Holmes said “We dug a little deeper and kept the pressure on them.”

That pressure produced two more Kadrlik goals, her team-best 16th and 17th of the season. Gehrke picked up another assist on the first score with Madison Kadrlik recording one on the second.

“Kenna had some awesome chances and it was good to see rewarded tonight,” Holmes said. “That line of her, Abby (Gehrke) and Alexa (Bricko) has really been finding the net lately. They’ve been accounting for a very high number of our shots all season.”

Farmington outshot Hastings (9-15) by a wide 37-14 margin with Tiger netminder Addison Moudry notching her fifth win of the season with a 13-save effort.

Holmes credited his much improved defense with keeping the puck away from Moudry.

“They stepped up and owned their roles,” he said. “They are locking things up, getting bodies and pucks outside the scoring areas of our zone.”

The Tigers will try to make it three in a row Thursday night when they entertain Metro South in a South Suburban Conference game at Schmitz-Maki Arena. A Saturday home matinee against Rosemount will close out the regular season..

It took eight straight losses, most of them extremely close, and 29 days but the Tigers finally got back in the win column Saturday night with a solid 4-1 South Suburban Conference victory over Eagan at Eagan Civic Arena.

“The big difference between this game and the ones we were losing is simple,” Farmington coach Jon Holmes said. “We won on the scoreboard!

“We played well, much as we did during the losing streak. We kept the other team away from the net, angled well and cleared away rebound chances. Throw in a couple of quality saves and learning that if we want to we can keep the other team to a goal or a less and you have a winning recipe.”

Madison Kadrlik got the visitors off to a good start with an unassisted goal midway through the opening period but the Wildcats responded three minutes later to knot the score after the first 17 minutes of play.

Kadrlik (from Amelia Goblirsch and Addison Trapp) put the Tigers back on top with her second score of the night early in the second frame and the lead swelled to 3-1 at 14:51 when sister Kenna Kadrlik found the twine on assists from Abby Gehrke and Alexa Bricko.

Bricko (from Trapp and Kenna Kadrlik) tallied a power play goal midway through the final period to nail down the win.

Farmington won the shots on goal battle by a 27-21 count with Tiger goaltender Kieley Curow picking up the win with a 20-save performance.

The victory boosted the Tigers’ season record to 6-16 and 4-12 in South Suburban Conference games.

“We still have a lot to prove to ourselves,” Holmes said. “But this game was good for us as I think it’s a good thing to go into the final week of the regular season with a chip on our shoulder and feeling like we are a team that can win in the playoffs.”

The Tigers close out their regular season this week with a trio of home games: Tuesday versus Hastings; Thursday against Metro South and Saturday afternoon with Rosemount. Section 1AA play begins the following week.
