Jordan Chancellor said her Blake team was rattled heading into the second intermission of its game Friday with Cretin-Derham Hall.

The Raiders had scored two quick goals just before the end of the second period, trimming the Bears’ lead to one.

“We definitely got frazzled after the two goals, like really fast, but we got back in the locker room and we went through some logistical stuff,” said Chancellor, a senior captain who has committed to play for Yale University. “Everybody took a deep breath and figured it out.”

Blake entered the third period with a renewed focus, rejuvenated spirit and some reshuffled lines, helping the Bears score two goals and withstand a late rally from the Raiders to record a 5-3 victory at Charles M. Schultz-Highland Arena in St. Paul.

Chancellor scored the game-winner five minutes into the final period, her second goal of the night, and senior forward Carlie Lund tallied her second goal on an empty-netter with 16 second to play in the game for Blake, No. in the Class 1A coaches poll.

Blake coach Shawn Reid said his team was “lucky” to earn a victory over Cretin-Derham Hall.

“(The Raiders) took it to us,” he said. “They pinned us in our zone all game long, so they were awesome tonight.”

Cretin-Derham Hall’s awesome play helped the Raiders cut into Blake's three-goal lead, and do so in less than 60 seconds.

The Bears opened the scoring with 7:26 remaining in the first period when senior defender Lilia Everson netted a power-play goal following a Raiders’ roughing penalty.

Lund scored on another power-play three minutes later, and Chancellor’s short-handed goal increased Blake’s lead to 3-0 midway through the second period.

Sophomore defender Bree Osborne's attempt to dump the puck into Blake's zone turned into a goal for Cretin-Derham Hall with 1:30 left to play before intermission. Freshman goalie Anna Kruesel couldn't control the puck and it ricocheted off her stick into the net.

Raiders junior forward Courtney Koemptgen scored less than a minute later, cutting Blake’s lead to 3-2 and sending the Bears to the locker room reeling.

Chancellor’s goal early in the third provided the cushion Blake needed as senior forward Rosie Pitera scored for the Raiders to trim the deficit to one goal with less than three minutes to play.

Lund’s late goal made the final margin two.

Reid told his team it will face more hardships this season.

“All season long we’re going to have adversity,” Reid said. “We talked a lot about, ‘Now what? This happened, now what are you going to do about it.’”

The victory over Cretin-Derham Hall is Blake’s second of the season against a team ranked in Class 2A. The Bears recorded a 3-0 victory at No. 9 Lakeville North on Nov. 7.

Reid said his team’s work ethic is the reason for Blake’s success against programs from larger schools.

“We’re lucky to have some good talent, but hard work beats talent, so we try to instill a strong work ethic as well,” Reid said.
