Blake did not need an emotional speech or incendiary comment to get back on track after falling behind rival Breck by two goals in Thursday's matchup of Class 1A’s top two teams.

The Bears didn’t need their competitive sides stoked because they had confidence.

“We’ve come back from behind a few times this year,” Blake forward Jordan Chancellor said. “We stayed comfortable and confident.”

The top-ranked Bears showed off their poise, rallying with three third-period goals to erase the deficit and hand the second-ranked Mustangs a 3-2 defeat in a Independent Metro Athletic Conference game at the Blake Ice Arena.

Senior forward Karlie Lund said the Bears never felt as if they were in danger of losing despite entering the third period trailing 2-0.

“We always knew we could come back and win,” Lund said.

Chancellor said emotions can sometimes show through in a close game (such as the one against Breck), but the Bears never lose sight of their main goal - winning.

“Emotions flare all the time,” Chancellor said with a smile. “But we’re really good about bringing ourselves back together.”

Blake displayed that confidence during the final 17 minutes of the game as the Bears scored all three goals within the period’s first 8 minutes and then withstood Breck’s late charge to secure the victory.

Chancellor capped the comeback, scoring the game-winning goal as the senior turned on the jets and left a Mustangs’ defender in her wake before slipping the puck past Breck goaltender Sydney Scobee.

“Jordan’s one of the fastest players in the state,” said Lund, who scored the tying goal by  slapping home a rebound shot on the power play. “She can always step up in big games.”

Chancellor’s goal increased her season total to 14, equaling her regular-season total from last year. Chancellor, however, is more than a goal scorer for Blake. She has grown into a leader in the locker room.

“She’s one of our captains,” Bears coach Shawn Reid said. “She’s been great in that role.”

Lund scored the tying goal, slapping home a rebound shot on the power play.

Chancellor and Lund have been members of the two-time defending Class 1A state champion Bears since the eighth grade, and Lund said the familiarity has a positive impact both on and off the ice.

“She’s one of my best friends,” Lund said. “I think that translates well on the ice.”

Their time as teammates will come to an end after this season, as Lund will play for Princeton and Chancellor will skate for Eastern College Athletic Conference rival Yale next year.

First Report

Senior forward Jordan Chancellor scored a shorthanded goal with 9 minutes left in the game as Blake rallied to defeat rival Breck 3-2 in an Independent Metro Athletic Conference matchup at Blake Ice Arena on Thursday.

The Bears, ranked No. 1 in the Class 1A coaches poll, scored three third-period goals to erase a 2-0 deficit.

Sophomore forward Lucy Burton scored just 17 seconds into the period, and senior forward Karlie Lund tallied the game-tying goal at the 6:15 mark on a power play.

Chancellor’s game-winning goal came on a beautiful breakaway, and the Bears (11-1-0, 1-0-0) withstood a late charge by the Mustangs, No. 2-1A to secure the victory.

Sophomore forward Grace Zumwinkle scored both goals for Breck (8-3-0, 0-1-0). Junior goaltender Sydney Scobee had 33 saves in the losing effort.
