Paige Voight and Cretin-Derham Hall nearly pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the girls’ high school hockey season Tuesday afternoon.

Voight scored two goals, helping the Raiders come within minutes of defeating Eden Prairie, ranked No. 1 in the Class 2A coaches poll. Instead, No. 10-2A Cretin-Derham Hall settled for a 2-2 tie when the Eagles scored the equalizer with less the 3 minutes to play and then went scoreless in overtime of the game at Charles M. Schultz-Highland Arena in St. Paul.

“You can only hold them for so long,” Raiders coach John Pohl said. “It’s hard to fault our goalie. It’s hard to fault our kids; they played super hard.”

Cretin-Derham Hall was in position to vie for the victory thanks to Voight, whose two second-period goals erased Eden Prairie’s 1-0 lead.

Voight scored her first at the 5:17 mark of the first period, knotting the game 1-1.

Her second goal was of the highlight-reel variety and came moments after she finished serving a 2-minute checking penalty.

A clearing pass from junior forward Courtney Koemptgen arrived as Voight left the penalty box. Voight controlled the puck and outraced the Eagles defenders to the net.

Voight was first to the goalie, but waited until the last moment to shoot.

She carried the puck from one side of her stick to the other, eluding both Eden Prairie defenders. Voight then waited for freshman goalie Alexa Dobchuk to sprawl out before pushing the puck into the goal.

“It was lucky that we got the opportunity, but it was a beautiful goal by Paige (Voight),” Pohl said.

Voight knew she was going to score once the puck touched her stick, she said.

“It was so exciting,” Voight said. “I saw the puck coming right towards me…I saw the two girls coming from behind and I just knew I had it.”

Voight’s confidence is not surprising considering she runs through this type of play at every practice. Raiders senior goalie Emma May is often the victim of Voight’s deadly move at practice, and the Minnesota commit said she knew Voight was going to score.

“I was looking forward to that goal,” May said. “I knew she would get it because she always gets it on me,” May said.

Voight, who will play at Merrimack next year, leads the Raiders with 25 goals and 35 points.

First Report

Senior forward Paige Voight netted two goals as Cretin-Derham Hall and Eden Prairie played to a 2-2 overtime tie Tuesday afternoon at Charles M. Schultz-Highland Arena in St. Paul.

Voight scored both goals in the second period, helping the Raiders - ranked No. 10 in the Class 2A coaches poll - overcome a one-goal deficit.

The No. 1-2A Eagles took a 1-0 lead on junior forward Kate Rydland’s a goal nearly 3 minutes into the second period.

Voight evened the game with a power-play goal at the 5:17 mark.

She tallied her next goal 10 minutes later, after serving a 2-minute for checking.

Voight caught a clearing pass from junior forward Courtney Koemptgen and then waited patiently to push the puck past the right pad of Eagles freshman goalie Alexa Dobchuk, who had sprawled out trying to make the save.

Eden Prairie junior forward Kelly Wolfe scored the equalizer with less than 3 minutes to play in the game.

The teams went scoreless in the 8-minute overtime.

Cretin-Derham Hall senior goalie Emma May finished with 29 saves, while Dobchuk made 25.

The teams do not play again until Monday, when both compete in the Mid-Winter Meltdown tournament at the Eden Prairie Community Center. The Eagles (11-0-3) seek to rebound against Benilde-St. Margaret’s, while the Raiders (10-1-3) square off against another Lake Conference foe, Wayzata.
