Andover entered the Schwan Cup tournament on a four-game losing streak, and Huskies coach Melissa Volk said the most important thing her team needed to do to end the skid was capitalize on opportunities and score goals.

That they did. Andover scored 11 goals and won all three of its tournament games, including a 3-1 victory over Rogers in the Schwan Cup Silver Division championship game Wednesday night.

Sticking to their game plan -- one that also included limiting the Royals' Paetyn Levis, the state’s third-leading goal scorer (28) and fifth-leading point scorer (39) -- helped the Huskies keep the game close until a scoring surge in the final period sealed the win.

Andover’s Nicole Sedey, who scored two third-period goals, said paying attention to offensive threats such as Levis had to be a priory.

“You definitely have to watch when those players are out there,” Sedey said. “We don’t sit and watch her, but we make sure we know what we’re doing when she’s out there. We can’t let her slide by.”

Volk hopes the tournament wins will bring her team’s confidence back.

“We have a pretty young team, so the confidence from winning is important,” Volk said. “The first game (of the tournament) we were actually down two goals, so gaining confidence with the puck and scoring goals is big.”

Levis got the game’s scoring started just 12 seconds into the first period, finding the net off a feed from Madi Chapman. Andover’s leading goal-scorer Claire Butorac tied the game with 11:49 left in the second. Going into the third period with the game tied at 1, Volk told her team to start the period strong.

Sedey took her coach’s words and put them to action, scoring her first goal 46 seconds into the final frame.

“We talked about controlling the puck, working hard, and not letting Rogers score,” Sedey said. “We just needed to compete with them and keep the puck in their zone.”

Andover’s offensive zone time increased in the third period and resulted in nine shots — more than its total from the first two periods combined. Sedey took advantage, netting both her goals off rebounds in front of Royals goalie Hailey Hartlage. With her performance, Sedey is second on the team in goals (8) and tied for second on the team in points (15).

Butorac had a productive tournament, recording four assists — including setting up both of Sedey’s goals against Rogers (10-4-1) — and five goals. Volk praised Butorac’s two-way play.

“Claire plays as well for us on the offense as she does on defense,” Volk said. “She backchecks and forechecks. We rely on her a lot; she pretty much played, with the exception of today, every other shift the whole tournament.”

Sedey said playing in a tournament with three games in three days is different but a lot of fun.

“It’s definitely important to watch what you’re eating and get a lot of sleep,” Sedey said. “Plus, going hard and drinking a lot of water during the game because your legs get tired. But we condition a lot to get ready for it, so it felt good.”

First Report

Nicole Sedey scored two third-period goals to lead Andover past Rogers 3-1 in the Schwan Cup Silver Division final at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis on Wednesday night.

Rogers (10-4-1) got its offense off to a fast start, as team-leading scorer Paetyn Levis beat Andover goalie Cassidy Stumo just 12 seconds into the game for the early lead. Levis now has 28 goals and 39 points on the season.

Trailing 1-0 going into the second, Claire Butorac, leading goal-scorer for the Huskies (8-5), tied the game 1-1 on a shot right outside the crease.

Nicole Sedey, who had 13 points on the season coming into today’s matchup, scored the game-winning goal 46 seconds into the third period. Sedey added an insurance goal later in the period.

Andover’s Stumo registered 20 saves, while Hailey Hartlage had 14 saves for the Royals.

Rogers entered the game on a five-game winning streak. Both teams won their first two games of the Schwan Cup to make it to the division final. Andover had one-goal wins over both Holy Family/Waconia and Moose Lake. Andover shut out Cloquet-Esko-Carlton before defeating Anoka in overtime yesterday.
